Chocolate Caramel Brownies (Hazel's Downfall)

From Hazel McRae

Note: For health reasons, Grandma McRae was not supposed to eat sweets. She called her daughter Dona one day and told her about this recipe she found and how yummy it sounded. She declared, “I am going to eat this if it kills me.” She passed away the next morning and in the kitchen was the pan of brownies with a tiny corner missing.

1 German Chocolate Cake mix (no pudding in the mix)

3/4 c softened argerine

1 c chopped nuts

1 14oz can sweetened condensed milk

1 14 oz pkg caramels (about 50

1 c chocolate chips

Reserve 1/3 c sweetened condensed milk and set aside. Combine cake mix, margarine, the remaining sweetened condensed milk, and nuts. Mix with hands. Pat half of dough into a greased 9 X 13” pan. Bake at 350 for 6 minutes. while brownies are baking, melt caramels with reserve 1/3 c condensed milk in the microwave and keep warm. Drizzle caramel mixture over baked brownies, then sprinkle with chocolate chips. Top with spoonfuls of remaining dough, spreading to cover as much of the caramel and chocolate as possible. Bake 15-18 minutes more.
